Lansing’s Creative Community: Jacklyn Taylor: Organizing Member of the AU

Who are you?

Jac (Jacklyn) Taylor. I am passionate about people. I love everyone even when it’s hard to like them. I try to find the good in all places. It’s not so hard when you do a little looking.

I love to uplift and support my community by being involved in the city functions as well as just being available as a friend and a helping hand whenever I can.

My passions lay with the arts overall. Art saves lives; it saved mine. I’m a dedicated artist and have been since I could walk, or dance I should say.

I try to stay upbeat and positive for myself and others, especially right now in the given climate. Overall, love is my goal and I refuse to let anyone simmer my shine.

What’s your medium?

Dance and Poetry

Do you remember the moment you wanted to make art?

I’ve been dancing in studios and local schools my whole life. I started at the studio at three years old. I had the privilege of being a part of the performing arts magnet schools here in Lansing, from 3rd grade till 12th grade (Pleasant view, Everett), which allowed dance as a part of the curriculum. Aside from studios and public schools, I went to EMU and obtained a degree, in which my minor was dance. So, not to toot my own horn, but I am a professional dancer and dance instructor.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature and people. The best inspiration is life itself: the nature I’m surrounded by and the people I get to meet along the way. My own life story has inspired many dance pieces and poetry as well. Being adopted as a baby, and widowed early in my 20s, to mention a couple things, has given me more to work from than I can express. I am also very inspired by strong and empowered women, those who stand against the tide and don’t let the waves knock them down. I come from a long line of Wonder Women and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention them as a major part of my inspiration. Also, the LGBTQ+ community has and will be a driving point in my art form.

Where can we find your work?

Facebook or the Danceworks of Michigan website.

I am at every AU main stage showcase. I participate in as many community art events as I can, and I love shopping at local businesses. Buy local art!
